Mini Animation Tutorial

I was recently sent a PM at MTS2, asking if I could explain how to change animations in a package to another anim from something else in the game.

I thought it might be useful if I posted a copy of my reply here, just in case anyone else was also wanting to know how to do this.

This works on the premise that you already know the basics of using simPE.

If you look in the text lists, you will usually find that some of them are for animations. You will usually have something like (I am using the Fingerprint Scanner as an example):

Anims - Object -Adult
Anims - Adult
Anims - Child

In each of those you will find a list of animations e.g.

a2o-fingerprintGun-scan-loopScanUpDown
a2o-fingerprintGun-scan-loopScanLeftRight

To replace any of these, you just click on one and in the edit box above (the one with "String" next to it) you replace the name, for the name of the anim you wish to replace it with. (Anim names are case sensitive). e.g.

a2o-fingerprintGun-carry(Carry)

Then click "commit"

If you had used this anim to replace the other two I mentioned, the sim holding the fingerprint scanner would no longer go through the scan animation.

cool so far? lol

OK, to change to an anim from another object, you can simply open the object containing that anim and see what it is called, and then enter the name into the object you are working on. e.g. you could replace:

a2o-fingerprintGun-scan-loopScanUpDown

with

a2o-puttinggreen-putt-succeed

then the sim will no longer scan up and down, but instad look as if they have just putted a ball on the putting green.

Alternatively, you can find every anim in game, in "program files", ALL the animations for the sims 2 can be found here:

C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\The Sims 2\TSData\Res\Sims3D

The 2 files you are looking for are:

Objects00 (Object anims)
Sims00 (Sim anims)

(The expansion folders contain similar files)

Open one of these files and click on "Name Map" then click "Name Map" in the larger box, then click "Plugin view" you will now see a list of ALL the anim names in this file (of which there are thousands)

When copying the name do not include the word "anim" at the end e.g.

a2o-puttinggreen-putt-succeed_anim

you only need to copy

a2o-puttinggreen-putt-succeed

Now in front of each anim you will see a code, it is self explanitory almost, but I will list a couple so you get the Idea:

a2o = Adult to Object
c2o = Child to Object
o2a = Object to Adult
c = Child
e = Elderly

and so on.

And that is how we change Anims.

If there is any of this you didn't understand, just let me know.

Have fun.

Ok I need a little help. The anim I am looking for is 'meditate' which is not from an object. Does anyone know how to get it? :?: :?: :?:

It will be in the sim anim file, not the object anim file. If the anim is from an EP then it will be in the sim anim file for that particular ep.

Re: Mini Animation Tutorial

Thanx VampCat. I was actually wondering how to do this. This explains how to change an animation in a cloned object to another one but if I wanted to just add one am I correct in assuming that it would be called at some point by the BHAV based on the string# of in the text lists?

Re: Mini Animation Tutorial

That would be correct ahmird. :) You would add a node in the bhav for "Animate Sim" from the primitives tab, then put in the operands that refer to your textlist/string#. Like if your Animation was in textlist 0x00000086, and your animation was in the 5th string, the operands would equal....

0500002000008600000A000000FF0000
